For what appears to be a simple double-eyelid surgery, Professor Du Yuanyuan has devoted 25 years to research and innovation. During the 14 years from undergraduate study to postdoctoral research, Professor Du Yuanyuan built a solid medical foundation. After graduation, she went to the Ophthalmic Research Center of Singapore General Hospital to specialize in ocular surface stem cell research, which gave her a deeper understanding of the importance of ocular structures and the functions of various tissues. She was the first to propose the concept of “Healthy Aesthetic Eye”, advocating natural, non-damaging surgical approaches and performing successful cosmetic or revision surgery without removing ocular tissues, under the premise of protecting ocular health.

 

Traditional double-eyelid surgery removes a large amount of orbicularis oculi muscle and orbital septal fat to create firm subcutaneous scar adhesion and achieve a double-eyelid appearance. However, the orbicularis oculi muscle and fat tissue are important structural components of the eyelid and are very important for eyelid movement, support, and maintaining a youthful state. Therefore, Professor Du Yuanyuan's double-eyelid surgery is comprehensively designed based on eye size, eyeball protrusion, levator palpebrae superioris muscle strength, etc., without removing the orbicularis oculi muscle or fat, achieving the best postoperative result with minimal trauma.

 

The root cause of eye bag formation is relaxation of the eyeball suspension system, descent of the eyeball, compression of the lower orbital fat, together with relaxation of the orbital septum and changes in the orbital bone wall.

Traditional eye bag correction removes the protruding fat tissue or redistributes the fat tissue in the lower eyelid area, combined with excision of lower eyelid skin. Professor Du Yuanyuan does not remove fat to achieve an eye bag removal effect; instead, she returns the fat compressed into eye bags back into the orbital cavity. This not only elevates the eyeball and avoids depression of the upper orbital area, but also, combined with lifting of the lower eyelid soft tissues, truly achieves lower eyelid rejuvenation while ensuring natural beauty and healthy aesthetics of the eyes.

 

Canthoplasty is suitable for patients with small palpebral fissures and epicanthal folds. It mainly includes medial canthoplasty and lateral canthoplasty. Professor Du Yuanyuan customizes the canthoplasty plan according to the patient's age, preferences, specific eye conditions, and ocular aesthetic standards, naturally enlarging both eyes while broadening the visual field and making the eyes more expressive and beautiful!

1. Characteristics of Medial Canthoplasty:

Professor Du Yuanyuan selects the medial canthoplasty method according to different eye conditions and provides personalized customization while safeguarding ocular health. For mild epicanthal folds and patients who prefer a tapered double eyelid, the simple Y-V method can be used; for those who prefer a parallel double eyelid, the modified Z-plasty method can be selected, maximally enlarging the eyes and restoring bright eye charm.

2. Characteristics of Lateral Canthoplasty:

In addition to its aesthetic role, the lateral canthus also has a tear reservoir function. Traditional lateral canthoplasty often focuses more on eye morphology and neglects the functional aspects of the lateral canthus, leading to postoperative scar retraction and persistent tearing. Professor Du Yuanyuan's modified lateral canthoplasty completely changes the traditional concept: it not only truly elongates the palpebral fissure and enlarges the eyes, but also stabilizes the lateral canthus morphology and protects its normal function; at the same time, it can lower an upturned lateral canthus, making the eye proportions more consistent with Asian aesthetic standards, so patients gain health while possessing bright and beautiful eyes.

 

Traditional ptosis surgery only pursues achieving a normal height when opening the eyes. Professor Du Yuanyuan's modified ptosis correction uses levator resection while preserving the suspension system, not only achieving a normal height of the upper eyelids and a beautiful eyelid margin curve, but more importantly, providing better eye-closing function. While solving the pathological problem, it strives to achieve a new level of unity among morphology, aesthetics, and function.

 

Mild--unsmooth double-eyelid curvature, asymmetry between the eyes, or double eyelids that are too wide or too narrow. This type of revision is relatively simple: the double-eyelid morphology is redesigned and the symmetry of both eyes is adjusted based on eye size, eyeball protrusion, levator palpebrae superioris muscle strength, etc.

Moderate--unsmooth double-eyelid curvature accompanied by eyelid fat deficiency or ptosis. This type of revision requires not only orbital fat supplementation but also levator palpebrae superioris repair.

Severe--aging, laxity, and sagging of eyelid skin, difficulty opening the eyes, and sunken eye sockets, mainly caused by internal structural damage. By combining autologous fat grafting and levator palpebrae superioris correction, it can not only repair functional damage but also improve eye morphology and skin condition, achieving comprehensive rejuvenation effects.

 

As a representative figure in domestic ophthalmic plastic surgery, Professor Du Yuanyuan has been invited to attend many international ophthalmic plastic surgery conferences and has conducted live surgical broadcast teaching on multiple occasions: in 2016, at the surgical PK session of the Pan-Asia Eye and Nose Practical Forum held in Nanning, Professor Du Yuanyuan won a resounding victory with her minimally invasive, tissue-preserving surgical characteristics, and her score far exceeded those of renowned eye plastic surgeons from Japan and South Korea; in 2017, at the live surgical broadcast demonstration of the Pan-Asia Eye and Nose Summit Forum held in Suzhou, Professor Du Yuanyuan performed a very complex and difficult eye revision surgery, demonstrating her meticulous surgical design, advanced surgical plan, solid technical skills, and immediate response capability. She presented numerous ophthalmic plastic surgery experts and patients with a visual feast of medical aesthetics comparable to international standards, once again pushing current domestic difficult eye revision techniques to a new height.
